Press Release from the band Móveis Coloniais de Acaju
Autor: Móveis Coloniais de Acaju | Data: 17/06/2008
Móveis Coloniais de Acaju had a remarkable performance in the most important brazilian music festivals while giving continuity to the national publicity tour of their debut cd, “Idem” (2005, Tratore). In Brasilia alone they sold over two thousand copies in a mere ten days, unprecedented for an independent band. “Idem” was produced by Rafael Ramos with an initial release of three thousand copies and is now currently in its fifth print. Nowdays, the band has sold almost seven thousand copies of their debut album.
The name of the band is based on a historical event - a conflict between indigenous peoples and the Portuguese against the English in the Bananal Island. Just like the origin of its name, which translates into English as "colonial furniture made of mahogany-like wood", the band also has a unique style. Using food analogy, they have described themselves as a "Bulgarian feijoada". This is made evident in their mix of rock and ska influenced world and Brazilian music.
"Móveis Coloniais de Acaju are a sort of intelligent blender that use an infinity of genres and rhythms without, however, sounding deliberately 'eclectic' ", says journalist Hélio Franco (Correio Braziliense, May 13, 2005).
Móveis have found and conquered their place during the last seven years. "The band started playing in 1998, but only now, after playing in various festivals and lots of concerts, have they released their CD, which is of such quality that it guarantees their transition into the big leagues of Brazilian music", says Fernando Rosa, journalist and cultural producer.
Móveis have played in the following festivals: Brasília Music Festival (2003), Curitiba Rock Festival (2005), Bananada (2003 and 2004), and Porão do Rock (2000 and 2005), MADA (RN), Se Rasgum,(PA), Canecão (RJ), Humaitá pra Peixe (RJ), Via Funchal (SP), Festival Indie Rock (RJ eSP), Festival No Ar (PE), Circo Voador (RJ),Festa da Música (DF), Goiânia Noise Festival, (GO) e RecBeat (PE, 2008).
In concerts and festivals they have played alongside bands such as: Gotan Project, Weezer, Live, Alanis Morissete, Simple Red, Slackers(EUA), The Rakes ( UK) and Voodoo Glow Skulls(EUA); Desorden Publico (Venezuela); and the well-known Brazilian bands Nação Zumbi, Charlie Brown Jr, Ultraje a Rigor, Ira, Pato Fu, Barão Vermelho, Los Hermanos, Maria Rita and Orquestra Imperial.
Last year, The band release their new single, “ Sem palavras”, which was considered by the Brazilian Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the best 25 songs of year 2007.
